News from November 1st, we often make some gestures unconsciously, even while talking on the phone, and the person on the other end of the phone obviously cannot see our gestures. Today’s article may provide some clues as to why we use gestures in our speech. A study by Andrew Bass of Cornell University found a connection between sound and gesture in a seemingly impossible place: the brain of a fish.

　　Bass found that the part of the fish's brain that controls the chest muscles also controls the vocal muscles. For many fish, the sound actually originates from the movement of the chest. Some fish communicate by rapidly shaking their pectoral fins, and some shaking a muscle in the swim bladder. The mechanism is similar to our own sound strings. Bass said, "That is the historical proof of the combination of people's speech and gestures. I am not saying that humans and fish are exactly the same in this respect, but it at least shows a historical evolutionary process."

　　Bass is not the first to suggest that there is a deep connection between speech and gestures. As early as 1998, researchers at the University of Indiana discovered that even people who are born blind use gestures when communicating with others. Neither the speaker nor the listener can see these gestures, and I have never seen anyone use gestures when talking before.
